Stateful inspection: The capability of a security system to track and monitor the state of network connections traveling across it. In this context, “state” indicates the conditions of a connection at any point in its lifetime, encompassing aspects such as IP addresses, port numbers, and the sequencing information of packets. It can be used to ensure that incoming packets are legitimate responses to outgoing requests, hence providing a strong defense against unauthorized traffic.
