- Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
Multifactor Authentication (MFA): A security measure that requires users to provide two or more independent credentials to verify their identity. These credentials typically fall into three categories - something you know (like a password), something you have (like a smart card or a mobile device), and something you are (like a fingerprint or other biometric feature). By requiring multiple forms of proof, MFA adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.
- Multihomed Host/Firewall
Multihomed Host/Firewall: A device that has multiple network interfaces, each connected to a different network. This is commonly used for redundancy and load balancing, ensuring that even if one network goes down, the device can continue to function. It also provides a means to manage and segregate traffic, enhancing control and potentially improving security by preventing potential threats from crossing between networks.
- Multilayer protocols
Multilayer protocols: Multilayer protocols involve structuring network communications into separate logical layers, each with a specific function, facilitating both flexibility in network operations and enhanced security. This layered approach, exemplified by the OSI model and TCP/IP suite, allows for better abstraction, ease of troubleshooting, and the ability to apply security controls at different levels of the network.
- Multipart Or Multipartite Viruses
Multipart Or Multipartite Viruses: A type of malware that can simultaneously infect both program files and system sectors, activating at every system startup. This dual infection approach makes it difficult to completely remove, as it can re-infect cleaned parts of the system.
- Multiplexer
Multiplexer: A device that combines multiple analog or digital input signals into one output line. The selection of specific input is controlled by a set of selection lines. In networks, multiplexers are used to reduce the number of required transmission channels, thus improving efficiency by enabling data from different sources to travel along the same pathway.
- Multiplexing
Multiplexing: A technique used in data communication for combining multiple signals or streams of information onto a single transmission path. The objective is to facilitate efficient data transmission and reduce the need for multiple channels. Techniques like Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM), Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), or Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) are used depending on the nature of the data and communication system. This process plays a significant role in enhancing the capacity and managing the complexity of data transmissions.
