- UK Corporate Governance Code (formerly known as the Combined Code) A framework that sets out standards for good practice in relation to board leadership, effectiveness, remuneration, and accountability in the governance of UK-listed companies. It operates under a 'comply or explain' approach, whereby companies must publicly state their compliance with the code's principles or provide a rationale for any non-compliance.
- Unauthorized disclosure The release or exposure of sensitive or protected information without obtaining proper permission. This can involve the sharing of personal data, intellectual property, trade secrets, or classified information and often results in breaches of privacy, legal consequences, or potential damages to an individual's or organization's reputation.
- Unclassified Information that does not require any special protection or handling procedures. This data can be freely shared or distributed without significant risk of harm or violation of privacy. Despite its designation, unclassified information should still be managed responsibly to maintain the integrity and reputation of an organization.
- Unified Threat Management (UTM) A type of security solution that consolidates multiple security functions into a single system, aiming to simplify management and provide comprehensive protection. The consolidated functions may include firewall, antivirus, intrusion detection and prevention, and data loss prevention, among others.
- Uniform Resource Locator (URL) A web address that specifies the location of a resource on the internet. It consists of a protocol (such as HTTP or HTTPS), a domain name, and sometimes a path to a specific file or resource. It is used to navigate websites and access online resources. Examples include www.google.com, www.facebook.com, and www.thorteaches.com.
- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) A device that provides a consistent flow of electricity to connected systems for a short period of time when the primary power source is lost. In an environment where system availability is critical, a UPS can prevent system downtime, loss of data, or hardware damage due to power interruptions.
- Unit test A method of testing individual components of a system to ensure that they are functioning correctly. It verifies that each component, such as a function or a method in a codebase, behaves as expected when given a specific input.
- Unit testing The process of conducting unit tests. This type of testing is usually performed by developers during the development phase to identify and rectify bugs early in the development cycle. It helps ensure that modifications or additions to a system do not cause unexpected behavior or failures.
- UNIX A family of operating systems that are widely used in servers and other large-scale computing systems. It is known for its security and stability and its ability to handle multiple users and processes simultaneously. Examples include Linux, Solaris, and macOS.
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) A type of cable used in networking that consists of two twisted copper wires surrounded by insulation. It is used to transmit data over short distances, such as within a building or between nearby buildings. Examples include Ethernet cables and telephone wires.
