- Reverse engineering
Reverse engineering: The process of analyzing and deconstructing a product or system to understand its design and functionality. It is often used in the software industry to understand how a program or application works and to identify vulnerabilities or potential improvements. Examples include analyzing a competitor's product to understand its features and capabilities or studying a computer virus to create a solution to remove it.
- Review/Approval
Review/Approval: This phase in change management involves a comprehensive evaluation of proposed changes and the decision of whether to authorize their implementation. The process includes assessing potential risks, benefits, costs, and resource requirements of the change. Scrutiny at this stage is critical from a security standpoint to confirm that changes will not introduce vulnerabilities, weaken existing controls, or negatively impact the security posture of the system.
- Revocation
Revocation: The act of invalidating a digital certificate or cryptographic key. Once a certificate or key is revoked, it is no longer trusted and cannot be used for secure communications. Revocation is a necessary measure in situations where a key or certificate has been compromised, or the entity it represents is no longer valid.
- RFC 1087, titled "Ethics and the Internet"
RFC 1087, titled "Ethics and the Internet": A document issued by the Internet Activities Board (IAB) that outlines unethical behaviors in the scope of internet use, including malicious activities like hacking and the unauthorized access to systems. RFC 1087 underscores the importance of responsible usage, respect for the rights of users, and the preservation of the integrity of the underlying infrastructure.
- Rijndael
Rijndael: The block cipher algorithm that was chosen by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Rijndael was selected due to its robust security, computational efficiency, flexibility, and ease of implementation across a wide range of platforms. It supports a variety of block and key sizes and is widely used worldwide for encryption in various applications and protocols to ensure the confidentiality of data.
- Ring topology
Ring topology: A network configuration where devices are connected in a circular arrangement, with each device connected to two other devices. It is used in networking to provide a dedicated path for data transmission between devices. Examples include a ring network in a small office or a token ring network in a larger organization.
