Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP): A protocol used for managing and monitoring devices on a network, such as servers, routers, switches, printers, and more. It enables administrators to monitor network performance, find and solve network issues, and plan for network growth. SNMP works by sending messages, known as protocol data units (PDUs), to different parts of a network. Responses are returned with the required information, allowing administrators to take appropriate actions if needed.

SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol): A protocol for exchanging structured information in web services, using XML for message format and relying on application layer protocols like HTTP and SMTP for transmission. SOAP supports a wide range of operations and ensures extensibility and neutrality, while being platform and language-independent.

Simple Security Property: In the Bell-LaPadula (BLP) security model, this property ensures confidentiality by prohibiting a subject (user or process) from reading data at a higher security level than their clearance, known as the "no-read-up" rule.

Simplex mode: A mode of operation where only one-way communication is possible. It is often used in radio and other forms of wireless communication, where only one device can transmit at a time. For example, in a simplex mode radio system, only one device can transmit at a time, and the other devices must listen and wait their turn to transmit.

Simulation test: A process where a model of a system is created to analyze the potential behavior and performance of that system under different conditions. It allows for the testing of various scenarios, including stress scenarios and those that are challenging or costly to reproduce in real environments. In a security context, simulation tests can be used to identify potential vulnerabilities, analyze the impact of various threats, and evaluate the effectiveness of security measures without impacting the actual system.

Single Factor Authentication (SFA): A security measure that requires only one form of authentication, such as a password or biometric, to access a system or service. Examples include using a password to log into a website or a fingerprint to unlock a phone.
